This is the New Town of Inveraray as the Old Town was the other side of the Bay. The Duke of Argyll decided to build a new Castle and moved the Town to suit him! This was 250 years ago. The Old town was already 300 years old and had no less than 43 Taverns.
The town was moved to landscape the Castle gardens |

Inveraray has a Maritime Museum at the Harbour and many good eating places. Many of the buildings date from the 1700's, the Town Jail is now a museum and well worth a visit. New Inverary Castle was built 1745 - 1760 and is open to the public April to October. The Bell Tower in the Town has the second heaviest bells in the World after Wells Cathedral, they weigh nearly 8 tons ! Lot's to see here, and bring your camera ! |
